Cooking classes

Learn how (or at least try) to prepare traditional Khmer dishes was on my to do list, so I decided to enroll for a cooking class! For just $13 we cooked 3 dishes in a restaurant called Le Tigre de Papier.

We met a couple from Singapore and a French girl from Lyon. It's great to meet new people this way as we talked a lot about their life. The Singaporian man makes 3D applications and is sponsored by the cultural heritage association in Singapore. He explained that the country has changed tremendously over the past 5 to 50 years. Therefore, Inhabitants have the feeling that they lose track of their cultural and historical background. As a solution he imitates images from the past street life and buildings in a three dimensional street view application. Very interesting!

We started our cooking class with a visit to a local market to buy our ingredients. I loved this tour because our teacher explained everything about the various herbs and products they sell on the market!

We were ready to start the preparations! I decided to try out the Tom Yam soup, a spicy tomato with mushroom soup. Next, we prepared Amok, the most traditional Khmer dish. This is a curry dish which is often served with fish and presented in a banana leave. I like it, but I still prefer the green or red Thai curry ;) To finish, we learned how to make sticky rice with mango. They added condensed milk and rice sugar. As a dessert lover, I liked this last dish because it tasted similar to rice pudding!
